Sebastian Torres' Disappearance Edit
Two days prior, Sebastian's mother was waiting to pick him up from school, but he never came out. Because of their recent contact with Sebastian, Alex and Dr. Strand were called in for questioning by Los Gatos police chief Stan Colins. The last time Sebastian was seen, he was putting on his jacket at 3 p.m. and went to the restroom, where the only other exit was a small window. Colins notes that Maria Torres (Rodriguez) pointed the police in the direction of Alex and Dr. Strand, as the nature of the Black Tapes Podcast is dark enough that they could have inadvertently sent "a religious nutjob" in Sebastian's direction. Strand explains that the Torres family has been a victim of unusual events long before he and Alex were involved in telling Sebastian's story. Colins releases them, Alex tells him she and Strand are staying in town until Sebastian is found.
Alex explains that the police department has enlisted the help of psychic Tannis Braun (he has assisted other police forces previously with a high rate of success in finding missing people), as he was the subject of a PNWS episode in 1993. Alex plays the clip, where Tannis predicts with 88% accuracy the colour landed on by a spinning wheel in another room; he claims to have done this by bilocation, or being able to occupy both rooms at the same time. Strand denounces Braun as a fraud, or at best an excellent detective, and points out that Braun's Institute for Higher Learning indirectly funded the colour wheel experiment.
Alex accompanies Braun on his search for Sebastian at Portola State Park, as Braun says he felt pulled to that location after talking with Sebastian's mother and getting a sense of who Sebastian is through photos and personal belongings. Braun says he also got the sense from being in Sebastian's room, that he was in the presence of something very dark. Braun explains he's known he's had a gift since he was three years old and that everyone has these abilities to one degree or another, but that the particular way his brain is organized enables him to better utilize them.
Alex asks Braun about his ability to bi-locate, and he mentions that there's evidence that Vladimir Lenin had the same ability.
The Discovery of Sebastian Torres Edit
A hiker and his dog found Sebastian Torres in an abandoned cabin in Portola Redwood State Park, 5 miles northeast of where Braun and Alex were looking the day previously and three days after he was reported missing, having no memory of how he'd gotten there. The cabin hadn’t been lived in for at least 65 years when the State of California took over the park. Occasionally, hikers would use the building for shelter from rain, but the cabin was so far off the main trail that most people didn't know it was there. Once police had finished their investigation, Braun was permitted to survey the site.
Alex and Braun enter the cabin to discover the windows boarded up and drawings covering the walls. Alex recognizes one of the drawings as the one found in Sebastian's closet, but Braun insists Sebastian didn't create either of the drawings himself. Braun becomes increasingly agitated, saying something "not good" is in the cabin with them.
Alex sends photos of the drawings in the cabin to Dr. Strand, who determines they're evidence that someone was trying to summon a demon based on the arrangement of numbers forming a pentagram around a central figure.
Sebastian's parents refuse to speak with anyone at PNWS, saying they just want to put the incident behind them.
Call to Simon Reese Edit
Alex calls Simon Reese, a patient at Three Rivers State Psychiatric Hospital whose bedroom walls were once covered in similar symbols to those found in the cabin in the woods. Simon responds that the cabin must have been a place of worship at one time, but before Alex can get him to elaborate, Simon becomes almost hysterical, laughing and repeating the phrase "he's coming".
Strand's Investigation of the Cabin Edit
Alex invites Dr. Strand to investigate the cabin himself. They notice that as the sun passes through particular boards in one window, a cross is formed on the opposite wall. Strand determines that since the drawing was made on the south-facing wall, along with the inversion of a mathematical equation thought to be designed by god--the Golden Ratio--someone had intended to "let something in" from another plane, something "bad".
Charlie Strand Edit
Alex receives an irate message from Dr. Strand's daughter, Charlie, asking Alex to stop talking about her and her mother on the podcast. Alex returns her call, and though Charlie maintains Strand didn't murder her mother, she indicates that she believes Coralee is dead, and reiterates her request for privacy.
